Paint Colors That Sell: The Flipper's Palette

The right paint colors make a flip feel move-in ready. The wrong ones make it feel like someone else's house.

Paint is one of the highest-ROI renovation items — a full interior paint job costs $3,000–$8,000 but completely transforms the look and feel of a home. Choosing the right colors is essential for broad buyer appeal.

The cardinal rule: neutral doesn't mean boring. Today's popular neutrals are warm and inviting. Pure white walls feel sterile and institutional. Instead, use warm whites with subtle undertones — greige (gray-beige), warm white, or soft creamy tones that feel contemporary and cozy.

Proven best-selling paint colors include Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-17), Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray (SW 7029), Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter (HC-172), Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008), and Benjamin Moore Simply White (OC-117). These colors are perennial bestsellers because they work with virtually any furniture, feel fresh and modern, photograph beautifully, and appeal to the broadest range of buyers.

Use one color throughout the main living areas for visual continuity. Paint all bedrooms the same color (the main living color or one shade lighter). Bathrooms can be the same or a slightly different tone. Ceiling should be flat white or one shade lighter than the walls.

Strategic accent colors can add personality without alienating buyers. A dark navy or charcoal accent wall in the master bedroom, a bold color on the front door, or dark cabinets in a bathroom vanity can add visual interest that elevates the overall design.

Finish matters as much as color. Use flat or matte on ceilings, eggshell or satin on walls (easier to clean and more durable), semi-gloss on trim and doors (highlights architectural detail), and semi-gloss in bathrooms and kitchens (moisture resistance).

Always use the same paint brand and product line throughout for consistent sheen and coverage. Two coats minimum on all surfaces, with primer on any patched or repaired areas.
